Chief
Secretary for Administration Mr Rafael Hui inaugurated the Nanotechnology
and Advanced Materials R&D Center, under the banner of the Nano
and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI), an independent
corporation hosted by UST, at a launch ceremony for Hong Kong research
and development centers held on 20 April at the Hong Kong Convention
Center.
NAMI was
supported by the Innovation and Technology Commission with a budget
of over HK$400 million. "The mission of NAMI is to conduct
R&D in the area of nanotechnology and advanced materials, and
to facilitate the commercialization of the resulting products and
processes," said Prof Ka Ming Ng, NAMI Chief Executive and
Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering.
The new
company will focus on developing innovative, high value-added nano
products, with the aim of supporting Hong Kong industries. Nanotechnology
and advanced materials can be used in a broad spectrum of products
in our daily lives, ranging from cosmetics and air purifiers, to
advanced liquid crystal displays.
"Nanotechnology
is expected to be a major driving force in Hong Kong’s evolution
to a knowledge economy. NAMI stands ready to lead in this effort,"
said Prof Ng.
Four other
R&D Centers were also inaugurated during the ceremony, including
the R&D Center for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling
Technologies co-hosted by UST, the Chinese University of Hong Kong
and the University of Hong Kong.
